Historic French Castle With 26 Bedrooms Lists for €14.84 Million

A 15th-century castle in France's Loire Valley has hit the market for €14.84 million (US$16.3 million).

Known as the Chateau Laroche-Ploquin, the historic house sits on more than 17 acres in Sepmes, about 175 miles southwest of Paris. It was built on the foundations of a 13th-century fortress, but was updated and renovated in 2018 to allow for both "modern comfort and authenticity," according to last month's listing with Luca Lanzani of Côte d'Azur Sotheby's International Realty.

"The renovation work was carried out and supervised by a team of professionals specializing in the sector," he said in an email. "This is crucial information because, although we can admire beautiful castles with the same characteristics in the area, not all of them are currently in good condition, which makes the Laroche Ploquin even more unique and special."

Spanning more than 14,000 square feet, the residence features a facade with blésois quadrillage, a type of molding that takes its name from a wing built under Francis I of the Royal Château of Blois, another historic castle in the Loire Valley that is now open to the public, according to the listing.

There are 26 bedrooms, each "decorated and furnished in the spirit of Louis XV or Louis XVI," using fabric wall treatments, period furniture and materials such as Carrara marble, travertine and wood, the listing said.

Most recently used as a hotel with a restaurant, bar and lounge, the estate also offers several reception rooms, a swimming pool and spa and a workout room. The grounds include gardens, a lake and mature plantings, and there's room for tennis courts or additional buildings.
