The Crimson Flame Ruby
Not only is it large, but it also hails from the Mogok mine in Burma and radiates in the coveted pigeon's blood hue. This means its red is blood red, the richest and most saturated of any ruby color in the world.
In December 2015, this gorgeous ruby went on the block as Lot 2121 in Christie's Hong Kong Magnificent Jewels sale. Though nearly last in the lots offered, this extraordinary ruby, set in a beautiful mounting, headlined the sale.
Indeed, Christie's used it as their cover model for the sale's catalog. With a high estimate of $15 million, the ruby promised to deliver excellent results for the esteemed auction house.
Mounted in gold and surrounded by a large halo set with cushion-cut diamonds, the Crimson Flame Ruby also bears a cushion shape. The gold band features pave-set circular-cut diamonds in a three-quarter loop.
Furthermore, two renowned gemological labs certified the ruby. Both stated that this stone possesses remarkable qualities rarely seen even in the finest Mogok rubies of this size. For one thing, it exhibits exceptional clarity. In addition, the ruby's color remains homogeneous throughout, resulting in a richly saturated color.
Not surprisingly, this gorgeous ruby broke all the records when it sold for an astonishing price of $18 million in Hong Kong. At a rate of $1.2 million per carat, it set the world record for highest price paid per carat for rubies.
Of course, the buyer remains anonymous, and we may never see this ruby in public again. That anonymous someone must feel very happy to possess this gorgeous specimen of Earth's magnificence.
